Hi! I’m Jessica Zabow

I am a Sydney-based registered yoga teacher, nutritionist, and the founder of Alaya Holistic Health - a provider of yoga and nutrition services to individuals, organisations and communities. I hold a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition & Dietetic Medicine), and have completed almost 1500 hours of yoga teacher training, complimented by Certificates III & IV in Fitness. In 2023, I commenced a Masters in Public Health at the University of New South Wales, Australia.

Helping people and communities live healthier lives is my passion.

My Yoga Journey

I began practising yoga back in 2012, when I was 22 years old. I went to my first class to provide moral support for a friend - and I was hooked.

It took me by complete surprise. I thought I was going to a “stretching class” - but it was SO much more than that. I had no idea how it would make be feel physically, but also on a deeper level. The practice resonated through my cells, into something I had never known was there. It gave me a different and more nuanced level of consciousness, understanding, and exploration. It was hard to explain, but profound to experience.

That yoga class led to many yoga classes. I started in vinyasa yoga, and then was drawn to Ashtanga yoga. I practised with teachers all over the world, and my practice became a powerful, transformative and healing force in my life.

Yoga changed me, and it changed my life.

Becoming a Teacher

I took my first yoga teacher training throughout 2016 with a 500-hr diploma, and have not stopped training since. My primary teacher today is Tiffany Cruickshank and the Yoga Medicine teacher training team. My training includes specialised modules such as myofascial release, and yoga anatomy. I believe that to be a great teacher of yoga, you must remain a dedicated student of yoga. There is so much to learn, and I will be forever humbled by the vast offerings of yoga.

I began teaching yoga in 2017 and I fell in love with teaching, just like I fell in love with practising. I teach vinyasa, hatha, therapeutic yoga, gentle yoga, meditation, yin and restorative yoga, and myofascial release. There are a plethora of approaches to the practice and, depending on the students in front of you, these can all be valuable tools to help people improve all aspects of their health and wellbeing.

I am always deeply humbled by the profound teachings of yoga.

My Yoga Philosophy

I see my role as a “yoga facilitator”. Students are in their own practice, and I am helping to guide them through. Every student is different - they have different needs, preferences, and bodies. I like to provide students options. Offering them different places to explore that feel “nice, interesting, helpful - or all of the above”. I try to make classes as inclusive as possible - where there is somewhere for everybody to be, and for everybody to feel comfortable about being where they are.

Yoga is not about the shapes you make - it’s about the experience you cultivate in the shapes you make. And there are certainly some challenging (and pretty funky!) places to go - and when you go there, it’s from a place of play, of curiosity and exploration, not a place of achievement or force. The most powerful teacher in the room is the student, and more specifically, the student’s breath and attention.

I strive to facilitate my students to reconnect with their true teachers in the yoga room, and every room they enter - their breath and their heart.
